Bangor, Maine

Bangor sits on bank of the Penobscot River, and via the river is abut 60 miles from the ocean. As of 2014 the population in Bangor was 32,988[1].  It is the commercial and cultural center of eastern Maine and was the focal point of an enormous trade in Maine pine in the middle of the 19th century.

Starting around 1820, Bangor experienced a prolonged period of prosperity, founded on the timber that was harvested and shipped around the world. Ships were built in Bangor’s shipyards along the river and carried Maine pine to overseas destinations. Substantial fortunes were made, and some of the fine houses on the east side of Bangor were designed by Charles Bulfinch of Boston.  By 1860, Bangor was the world’s largest lumber port, with 150 sawmills operating along the river.

Bangor is home to Husson University and Eastern Maine Community College and the celebrated horror author, Stephen King.  The main campus of the University of Maine is at Orono, eight miles from Bangor.

The median age is 35.5. The US median is 37.2. 39.85% of people in Bangor, Maine, are married [1].

The average household size is 2.15 people. 25.95% of people are married, with children. 22.08% have children, but are single [1].
